Thing/Another World - special mention

One thing that always pleases me about Halloween (1978) is the chiller theater horror films (well, sci-fi really) that Carpenter features, two of which make my top three sci-fi all time: Forbidden Planet and The Thing from Another World. While there are significant differences in the two Thing versions, Carpenter shows the '51 film some love. The storm and location pinning the men in isolation. The monster is from space and can multiply ("Watch the skies!") which tells us the threat of extinction if set loose is palpable. Spotting the ship in the ice and the alien eventually getting free from block that was cut from ice. A special focus on dogs and how the alien hurts them. The title sequence. So there are nods and salutes to the '51 film by Carpenter that aren't just shot for shot, but he recognizes its influence.
