I didn't really think much about this until I was looking at the Extended edition of Dawn of the Dead (1978; I'm going back and forth between this and Argento's Zombi, Euro version), but Romero likes the crawling zombie grabbing at the foot of a live human with a gun. Every director has their own tricks to lean on to give the water the gulp in the throat and building heart beat. Romero goes with a trick that has the viewer on the edge of their seat wondering if the crawling zombie can actually get to the potential meal.

It works so why not go to it again, right? I actually think it does nag the viewer into saying, "For crying out loud, get the damn gun loaded and shoot already! Come on get the damn shot gun to shoot!". Romero can even make the unwalking dead terrifying.
