Todd & the Book of Pure Evil - The Toddyssey
A paraplegic student, Zack (Dan Skene), all of a sudden can
stand and walk, but his legs seem unable to stop moving, setting aflame…this
tells Todd he somehow has the Book of Pure Evil and hops on Zack’s back, with
the two “running forward in time”, right through a set of lockers. Forward in
the future Crowley Heights High School is Satanist Atticus’ lair, and the area
around the school is a hellish war zone, so Todd hops off Zack’s back and finds
his friends now calling themselves the Femme Batales, completely dedicated to
opposing (and conquering) their adversary who seems to have brought out his own
version of the Apocalypse. While Jenny now Man With No Name’s a cigarillo and Snake
Plisskin’s an eyepatch, the leader of this outfit, former cheerleader, Wanda,
and teacher, Ms. Dempsey (Marina Kerr), are her backup. Curtis is basically a
shell of his former self, the “chef” of their outfit, his increased aged
experience caused by his addiction to corn holes (!), with Todd hoping to convince
him to help motivate a final battle with Atticus, in the hopes of putting an
end to his reign of terror. Wanda and Dempsey (carrying around dildo nunchux!)
as Mad Max heroines and Jenny emulating macho badasses from favorite genre cult
films is just too fun, so I admit that while the episode is absurd for the most
part, it isn’t without its clever touches here and there. Chris Leavins just
revels in the wickedness of his Atticus character…I imagine when he reflects
back on his career, Atticus will be a highlight for Leavins. The future quite a
hellhole, Atticus is fully involved in how he molded and shaped all of it. It
seems once Todd left the past, it all went to spit. So he must find a way to
return to where he left or else the future will not end well for all his pals.
Hannah, in a bit of ridiculous irony, has become Atticus’ squeeze, more or less
the brains behind the reign, having to correct her man’s stupidity when Todd
perfectly questions his plans/schemes. It seems Hannah, during a threesome with
Jenny and Curtis, received a piece of Todd’s sword in her skull! So she lost
the morality/humanity/empathy that questions Atticus’ evil antics and actions!
This had to have been a blast to recreate the school as Atticus’ apocalyptic
playground, with all the Satanist sight gags, as Todd literally finds himself
in the middle of a war, always the unlikeliest of heroes, appealing to Curtis,
worse for wear and time-ravaged, to help him against Atticus. That Atticus gets
Curtis to betray Todd through the use of a bag of chips is rather amusing;
Curtis, realizing his error, though, will step up to get the ladies to follow
his lead against Atticus. Melanie Leishman, allowed to find her inner darkness
and be a villain, seems to enjoy her alternate Hannah quite a bit, the actual
ringleader who squares off with her buddy, Jenny. With the use of time travel
and getting to Mad Max the school, this episode of Todd & and the Book of
Pure Evil is a nice change of pace for the show. There's a slick scene where Todd and Zack travel too far in the past where a young Mewes' Jimmy has the Book of Pure Evil, meeting Nikki at the front door of the high school, which allows Todd to see he wasn't the first to be pursued by her for the book she seems to desire...
