Supernatural - The Real Ghostbusters
This plot couldn't be more dead on with it's aim of fan convention mentality. But it doesn't just set out to belittle or besmirch those who attend conventions on their favorite shows, those who put this episode together lovingly recognize the differing types of fan seeing the show they admire and have passionate feelings towards. And the sheer emulating of Sam and Dean's mannerisms, speech, and look by those in attendance could be enough to give this episode a winning grade. Sam and Dean are signalled to the convention, believing Supernatural author, "Carver Edlund" (Rob Benedict) summoned them. It was big fan, Becky Rosen (Emily Perkins, of the Ginger Snaps movies), who did so, with Chuck (Carver an alias) crushing hard for her. While begrudgingly encountering convention goes/visitors, Sam and Dean soon realize the resort is actually haunted by a teacher, her son, and her students, four out of the five out to kill! While the legend of the teacher murdering her son and students is worked into an investigation for convention attendees to solve, in the roles of Sam and Dean (!), the real Sam and Dean set out to stop them. Two of the attendees, Damien and Barnes (Devin Ratray, Buzz of Home Alone fame, and Ernie Grunwald), assume duties as Sam and Dean, truly astounded at what the real thing are willing to do (and what they know) in order to vanquish the ghosts on the rampage. Crystal Lowe, a hottie around the genre a lot in the mid 2000s, is an actress in the role of the teacher's ghost, asked to be her in order to manipulate the ghost kids so they're distracted as Damien and Curtis find their bones to burn them. A European tourist attending the convention as a pirate with a hook hand asking questions about why Dean and Sam's weapons were always knocked away from them, among other criticism certainly posited by fans of the show is an amusing addition as is the trouble of digging up burial plots and flicking the Zippo on in the first try by Damien and Curtis. Dean confronting how his and Sam's lives aren't entertainment but quite tiresome and burdensome, not for amusement, only for Damien and Curtis to retort how cool their journey is provides reason for him to reevaluate everything. Sam trying to avoid Becky's ogling and lustful gaze is hilarious. There are plenty of zingers and sight gags for fans to drink in. Ackles' reactions to absurdities like a convention celebrating his struggles and the impressions dictated by attendees are priceless. That it all gets real, damn real, is the punchline of the joke. Perkins is a delight. Carver having to keep convention fans from being bored proves that personalities behind (supposedly) their favorite content aren't always so charismatic! Safe to say Carver better come up with a new series to write about...Sam convincingly urges him to write no more books about them!
