Scream - In the Trenches

That ending, though. Seriously, fucking warped and right perfect for the slasher genre. Leads you on that wild goose chase, resolves you into belief that at least for this episode the killer failed, and then a trip wire Emma haphazardly crosses flips on a trenching machine which splits open a victim's head.

In the Trenches gives you another abandoned building for the cast to reluctantly enter, looking for another would-be victim, Will. At the end of Betrayed, Will had returned the blackmail money and evidence of a body placed in a trunk to Brooke’s father, the mayor. Piper had been hidden, recording their conversation, but she, along with Will, is not prepared for Scream killer to be in the midst. In the Trenches has the Scream killer calling up Emma for a game of “hide and seek”, purposely luring her to a bowling alley no longer in operation. Brandon James had once worked there, and a tape recording of Emma’s father awaits her with audio tying Maggie to an ultrasound picture located in the killer’s faux lair in the abandoned hospital. The “Daisy, Daisy” song is used to further haunt Emma and the secrets of her mom’s past are starting to come to light. Emma will get some answers in the next episode, Ghosts, with a “visit” from her father, played by Tom Everett Scott.

Brooke and Jake accompany Noah (who discovers the location of Will’s phone through a GPS tech trick) and Emma to the bowling alley. All four will be in danger when the Scream killer surprises them, knife in hand. However, they will find Will, but what else is there waiting on them? This has Noah quite anxious, providing some humor as the dread builds. There’s some fun “slasher lines” from Noah involving going into darkened, abandoned buildings and splitting up, including the “I’ll be right back” he warns against.

There’s the Emma/Kieran romance which is interrupted by Will’s disappearance and bowling alley visit. Audrey was taking a test disturbed by her trip to the police station. She gets a call from Noah, tells Maggie and Hud (Hud relieved Raine had been removed from the investigation) that she wasn’t with Emma despite what they were told from Kieran (lying on Emma’s behalf), and onward to the bowling alley are the police. But not before the Scream killer tries to get his pound of flesh. This is all about the next game and how Emma is further taken down a painful road that ultimately traumatizes her once again. To lose yet someone else, and see all that gruesome action up, close, and personal; Emma will have a hard time recovering from this one. The terror in the victim’s eyes and the blood splattering all over her, Emma is left looking into all that viscera. It packs a punch!
