Halloween 4 & 5 [AMC edits]
I was admittedly surprised that AMC left a good bit of the makeout between Brady and Sheriff Meeker's daughter, Kelly, intact. While watching Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), I did anticipate some of that scene to be whittled down, so it was a bit awkward with my daughter in the room. I recorded these sequels from AMC but despite how much the Friday the 13th films get the scissors even today when so much is allowed in network and cable/satellite television, I should perhaps have expected "more" left in for most of the other franchises. Even Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989),when Spitz and Sammie are in the barn about to have sex, there is a good bit left in. So networks are allowing more in all the other franchises, but I have no idea why Friday the 13th in particular is so heavily edited. I still think the roof scene where Michael chases after Rachel and Jamie is rather effective in Part 4, but having us stomach Tina, opting for her instead of Rachel, for the duration of Part 5 still rubs me the wrong way. That moment where Dr. Loomis and Jamie both beg Tina to stay at the clinic instead of going to the tower barn party where Michael most certainly will probably be--"Please be sensible" as she wags her arms and speaks in that obnoxious tone to Loomis while Jamie weeps and begs fucking angers me--is just so aggravating. And we're supposed to just loooooove Tina. What gives?! Dismissing Rachel, I go on and on ad nauseum about it. But I still think, and I guess I always will, that in Part 5 Rachel's absence is felt. She could have been such an anchor for the film with Jamie in her "child in peril" scenes still available in all their potency. Loomis' descent into madness, my daughter definitely brought up to me throughout Part 5. It is evident in Part 4 that what happened in Part 2 left an indelible mental impact that created the downward spiral Loomis conveys in Part 5. No matter where I look for reaction to Part 5 (and somewhat Part 4), folks fucking hate the mask. I do think that scene in Part 4 where Loomis and Meeker see kids in Myers masks all around them still works to this day. But in Part 4, Michael is very much just a force of evil that cannot be stopped...when you crush strong young men's throats with your bare hands and drive shotguns completely through victims (and scale rooftops with ease), you aren't "just a man". And Loomis, through Pleasance's ability to really heighten the mystique and enigma of Michael as The Shape, should be credited for the supernatural aspects of the Myers character. This isn't just a human being. It just can't be stopped.
