Quigley wanted some cute boys, found a demon instead |
I was watching a rather poor VHS quality print I have of Tenney's
Night of the Demons (1988), but luckily I found a solid version on YouTube. I just wanted to make sure I didn't leave October without at least watching one Quigley horror movie she features prominently in. While I can't say I'm the biggest fan of the film necessarily--the acting and dialogue are atrocious (but they are actually part of why the film has such a favorable following)--as far as how it depicts the Halloween season, "Night of the Demons" continues to remain in the conversation of "recommended horror viewings" for many a horror fan's list of essentials. Kincaid became a cult horror icon for her role in "Night of the Demons" while Quigley bends that sweet ass over for the guys (and the camera) aplenty. When casting Quigley, I wonder how this bending over every few minutes came up when she was either provided the script or met with those preparing the movie. This film benefits so much from the season it is set. One of the main attractions, also, is that Roger, a young black man, makes it out of the horror film intact and alive. He's resourceful, doesn't run towards danger (which helps to keep from dying), and always tries to keep himself aware of any threat. Cathy Podewell, dressed as Little Bo-Peep, seems like the most obvious candidate for final girl...she is sweet, soft-voiced, sensitive, and demure. Kincaid dresses clad in black, enjoys all things Gothic, and was the mastermind behind having a Halloween party at an old funeral home where a family was killed by a maniac who then committed suicide. That a sinister demonic presence emerges thanks to a "mirror seance" awakening it is not surprising as much as expected. Stooge remains the most obnoxious character in the film...and there are quite a few to choose from. But that demon makeup and just the camera work holds up well. But for me the Kinkaid Dance of the Damned still remains the best sequence of the film. Nothing quite compares, though, to lipstick in the the tit after Quigley has been possessed and goes off the deep end.
From the great Stooge himself: "Eat a bowl of fuck!"
That Hull House, though, is such a great location. A horror film in that place is simpatico. It does feel like a funhouse/spookhouse found off the beaten path. left unoccupied for quite some time. And the remaining survivors trying to flee the demon possessed friends with doors closing or locking on them...it does feel like a maze that seems inescapable.
