Halloween [AMC edit] Introduced to Daughter
I brought up watching Halloween (1978) in the previous "Saturday sequel" post but I didn't really bring up any further points really. It was cool introducing it to my daughter and gauging her reaction to it. She certainly responds to when Michael pursues Laurie, and the way Carpenter frames Michael in his stalking scenes was neat to get her input. The iconic closet scene where Michael tries to get at Laurie and when Michael leans up after being stabbed by the coat hanger and knife by Laurie with her back turned to him (after sending the kids for help) certainly gripped her. But she liked "Halloween 4" (1988) actually more, which surprised me. But, again, she was very receptive to Jamie's situation, her terror, the pursuit of her by Michael. All that grabbed her and didn't let go. AMC didn't have to cut much from "Halloween" (1978), though. I personally think that besides Lynda and Judith's breasts and just a bit of cursing, "Halloween" isn't really a film that should suffer much in terms of editing. I've watched it and talked about it so many times, though. I wanted to finally watch this and the 1981 sequel together in one night, but after watching "Halloween" today, I'm not sure if I will this year. Still, I will always remain glued to the great Loomis dialogue with Sheriff Brackett as he discusses Michael, the patient he never wanted out of any institution. The AMC cut does seem to shorten when Michael gazes upon Bob stuck to the door by the butcher knife. That time Michael "enjoys" his handiwork is always unsettling, no matter how many times I watch it. I did enjoy pointing out when Michael is in places that my daughter might miss, because I appreciate what John and his team were trying to accomplish by evidencing the true effectiveness of "the shape".
