AHS - 1984 Assortment
I've already watched this twice. Just my jam. Fans of 80s slashers, at least going by the first episode, feels like a fan's throwback, very talented cinematic aesthetic from Murphy and his crew. An embarrassment of riches if you like this sort of thing. I already want to watch the first episode again. I hope to just write about this over and over in the coming days. Growing up with this as a teen, sneaking viewings when I could, it was a bloody, familiar assembly of all the tropes, cliches, stylistics, and synth scores. Opening with an aerobics workout certain to return many of us to that very special time of Let's Get Physical, of Stayin Alive, of Jane Fonda's Workout, even reminding me of the coroner's eventual demise in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter where he was eyeballing aerobics on his tube before Jason saws his head off, this first episode already won my heart. But including Ramirez attempting to add Roberts to his body count and Mr Jingles escaping the loony bin similar to Michael in Halloween, and many other slashers, so he can add more ears to his collection cut from heads, this would appear to be a pluck-from-the-genre-staples kind of homage. Here's hoping Murphy takes twists from the giallo to throw curve balls at us.
