Lost - Exodus Part 3 [The Black Smoke]
When Rousseau spoke of the whispers in the jungle, of the
“others” we were left to wonder what they looked like and how they would
violently behave. What the raft-boat crew encounters could very well be them,
but Rousseau’s snatching of Aaron, Claire’s baby, in the hopes of having her
own son returned to her with a mission of retrieval targeting the black smoke
funneling into the sky was of great importance to the Oceanic survivors as
Sayid and Charlie aimed to stop her. But the journey was met with a stop that
could prove to be devastating for Charlie. The heroin in the Virgin Mary
statuettes was quite accessible to Charlie and Sayid was none the wiser. The
“others” nowhere in sight as Sayid and Charlie found their stop at the black
smoke, the sound of Aaron’s cry just in the jungle, and a distraught and
defeated Rousseau conceding him with the sad utterance of “I just wanted my son
back” in desperation; this confluence eventually does provide some minor solace
after a father lost his son to a boat of “human thieves”. Claire does feel her
baby in her arms again, Charlie and Sayid do feel some degree of satisfaction
that their mission was successful despite not truly facing the evil Rousseau so
passionately considers authentic. Charlie might have also brought back with him
the key to his undoing. At least Sayid gets a much needed hug from Shannon, one
due him. She needed to go through her period of mourning and realize that while
Boone is gone, she is still alive and breathing. A shot of Boone handing over
to Shannon her inhaler onboard the Oceanic is one lasting memory she can hold
dear as when his face turns she has a smile. On the island brother and sister
were parted, but Shannon must move on…
Oh, and key to the show's keen ability to keep alive dead characters, "Exodus Part 3" included some funny moments with Daniel Roebuck's science teacher, seen during moments when Hurley was rushing to get onto the plane.
