Lost - Boone's Farewell
I admittedly found Boone’s departure a bit disappointing as
Somerhalder did when told he would be killed off Lost. In twenty episodes of
the first season, I guess I am wondering if those in Lost Creative felt there
was no where left to take the Boone character. To just write him off to develop
Jack further seems a bit extreme, doesn’t it? The Walking Dead and Game of
Thrones, all the long running cult series do it, but I can imagine the shock of
a show in 2004 doing that so early in its tenure. I can only imagine it was a
shock to the system at the time. Mainly because the characters were still
undergoing evolution, losing Boone so early in the show’s run might produce a
thought of what might have been. Or perhaps Boone, as a character, did go as
far as the writer’s room could take him. I feel for Somerhalder because he’s a
good enough actor to take the character places if there were creative avenues
to go with him. I can only surmise he was sacrificed in favor of a gut-punch
and to pit Jack against Locke. This developing animosity will certainly produce
fireworks.
But Boone's umbilical was severed in regards to Shannon, so I had high hopes that his direction could go into areas quite refreshing. He was "burdened" by her demanding attachment to him. He was in love with her and that provided a reason for her to take advantage and often undermined his ability to flourish in life. On the island he was freed from the umbilical but, sadly, he seemed to become tied to Locke. And this was his own tragic undermining...
As you might be following me on my journey through the
series, I didn’t follow Lost during its initial run. I was watching a lot of
Disney and Nick Junior as my kids were babies, so the television was theirs. So
I’m writing on this series as a newcomer, which might give those devotees who
loved the show a perspective perhaps they might consider interesting. I hope
so, at any rate.
