Teen Wolf - Night School

Scott and Stiles are trapped in the school as the supposed Alpha awaits them angrily outside. As seen in the previous episode, Derek was “dispatched” (that is lifted off his feet and thrown off to the side like disposed garbage) by the Alpha (presumably the vet, Scott’s boss) while Scott and Stiles high-tailed it into the school. Now the Alpha plays cat and mouse with them, and the poor janitor happens to be working on the wrong night.

Meanwhile, Allison gets a text to meet Scott, with Jackson and Lydia driving  her to the school! Allison nonchalantly goes inside with a flashlight while Jackson feels somewhat concerned, believing there might be danger ahead. He and Allison share this *moment* and Lydia, from inside the car, sees their shared flirty smile (the “concerned”, “be careful” look of Jackson Allison tells him looks good on him, for which gives him the feel-goods) she’s pissed. So Scott and Stiles do what they can to keep from getting caught by the rampaging werewolf, hiding and eventually trapping it in a room.

Eventually, Scott hears Allison’s cell, connecting a call to her so that they can meet up. Soon Scott and Stiles join Allison, Jackson, and Lydia. All trapped in a room as the werewolf noises a lot outside of the barricaded door. Inside the chemistry room, in a matter of convenience or good luck, Lydia surprises them with knowledge on how to make a Molotov cocktail (again, she’s a grade-A student; she’s a nerd masquerading as an It-Girl), while Scott goes after the keys to a deadbolt leading to the roof. Allison’s teary-eyed plea not to go after it does no good, as Scott, despite his “tell” (Allison knows he has been lying to her about “some deranged guy” on the loose, even throwing Derek under the bus by claiming he’s the one responsible for all the violence) pursues the keys, on the janitor’s dead body. The Molotov cocktail doesn’t work as Jackson didn’t get sulfuric acid, so Scott tosses an ineffective liquid at the werewolf, is dragged across the gym floor, and awaits the Alpha butchering him. Instead the Alpha initiates Scott’s “inner werewolf” with him unable to stop the shift. In danger, the gang waits on Scott’s return unaware that the werewolf form could tear them apart at any moment. Allison undergoes a serious emotional trauma because he left her to face uncertain fate and when the cops arrive, Scott will realize that she has been overcome by his lies and unwillingness to listen to her pleas to remain with them instead of go after the keys.

Ultimately Scott seems on the verge of losing everything. Allison tells him not to call her, Scott is horrified by the werewolf feelings of desire to kill his friends, and he is under the impression that he is being willed to leave his old pack for the Alpha’s own pack. Not a good night for Scott at all. The episode hints at a gradual deterioration in the teenage boyfriend/girlfriend dynamic of Jackson and Lydia as the two of them spend the entire time arguing and remaining in a constant state of angst. And with that there are hints that Allison and Jackson are developing an unexpected spark. And Stiles is under serious strain because of Scott and his werewolvery.

Night School is that episode that finally did it. I was waiting for it and it finally happened. The separation of Scott and Allison. It was bound to happen. It was just going too well. And the happy-happy / joy-joy of a romance between two pretty students in high school in this kind of show’s setting is doomed to be undercut by those naughty folks in the writer’s room. So what’s next? Allison walks away and Scott is left to lament. And we prepare for what’s next for poor Scott.

I’ll say this: I thought that was a really shitty thing Scott done using Derek as a scapegoat for how his friends are endangered because of him. Derek is even harmed because he was there, brushed aside by the Alpha, and left to die. And what does he get in return? Scott tells everyone he has been mauling people! That is just a really awful thing to do. So I didn’t feel sorry for him at the end. He left me bummed. Then he tells Stiles that he should probably abandon them. Yeah, he lost some brownie points with me. Almost entirely in a school, the episode keeps the tension rising and threat of the Alpha building. But the resolution was never in doubt. Jackson’s scratch bringing him to his knees when the Alpha causes Scott to transition into a werewolf builds upon the mystique of his injury. This keeps Jackson interesting. Lydia could use some work, though.

I must say that the CGI werewolf Alpha does little for me. It looks rather cartoonish, quite frankly. Big disappointment. Better to make it this hurried blur and be more subtly stylistic with a less-is-more approach. Scott's make up, eye contacts, and claws are fun to me, though...
