Now Apocalypse - The Rules of Attraction
This is perhaps the more predictable of the first three
episodes of “Now Apocalypse”, so I admit that “The Rules of Attraction” didn’t
quite set the world on fire for me. But, truth be told, the jury’s still out
with me on this one season on Starz. I still feel that perhaps I’m not the
audience for it. It definitely feels like the perfect show for many of
millennials, particularly in LA. Uly comforts a sobbing Ford who thought he’d
be okay with an open relationship with Severine, but his heart is broken when
she informs him that she slept with an old flame (Iranian raised in Vienna,
Alain Washnevsky, his Mustafa visiting LA for one evening). Uly receives a
blocked number text requesting to see him and that is how the episode ends with
us wondering what will come of this. The episode is more interested in Carly’s
situation with an acting coach (character actress, Mary Lynn Rajskub), looking
to benefit from her outside-the-class knowledge, at her home, not necessarily
realizing that the whole point is for a lesbian hookup. Carly also is dealt a
blow when Amber surprises her right before rent is due with news she’s moving
to Utah with a hippy named Moonshadow! Carly and Uly talk about her new kinky sexual
door opened with her boyfriend, later telling her divorcee coach that he hasn’t
really given her much of an orgasm. The acting coach gets quite belligerent and
angry when Carly doesn’t reciprocate her advances, resulting in an outburst
that ends the classes, leaving the acting student to leave frustrated (and why
wouldn’t Carly be?) The ongoing naïveté of Ford in regards to Otto (Barnabas
isn’t in this episode), not realizing he’s desired by them, truly believing he
has interest in his “work”, is hilarious. Ford is honestly oblivious to it all,
just taking compliments about being a beautiful man and rubbing lotion on Otto’s
back in stride. Uly sees Reptile Alien come and go in a café, curious about a
book from an alien conspiracy author (Rollins). Gabriel has went silent much to
Uly’s disappointment, but he recollects to cynical Carly about the W and planet
image on the door in the alley and the same tattoo on the arm of Garbriel from
that evening they were at a restaurant table together. While not as
sexually-charged as previous episodes, Carly is naked in her tub while reading
a book on sex, unable to masturbate due to Amber’s leaving, and Uly looks on at
buff guys in speedos while he also strokes a bit. This is indeed a series on
sex…every scene involves desire to have sex, discussing sex, touching the body
while thinking about sex, or characters pursuing others for sex. 2.5/5
