Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - Piece 3
Why I’m enjoying Sabrina has a lot to do with the titles
used to describe the Dark Lord, the Book of the Beast, the Infernal Summons
(because Sabrina didn’t put her name in blood to pledge herself to Satan in his
book at Midnight on Halloween she is to appear before a tribunal) has ordered
her to be judged before a Court of the Witches for embarrassing Satan before
his coven of believers. And her aunts, too, because they raised her and were
responsible for Sabrina “doing as she was expected to do”. Dark Baptisms and
Infernal Summons and Sabrina needing a lawyer to outwit and defeat Satan in a
court of witches, and that lawyer is Daniel Webster (HA!).
You have a lot of “backdoor” meetings about Sabrina, such as
Zelda appealing to “The High Priest”, Faustus Blackwood to give her a chance to
avoid a “public spectacle”, with him willing to agree if she totally submits,
while Wardwell surfaces once Zelda (who is losing hair and “aging” as Faustus notices)
leaves to share reminders and threats with Faustus (she “feasts on male flesh”
and doesn’t take kindly to disrespect) about being Sabrina’s ward, how she got
her to the altar while he failed to get her to sign the book. Sabrina is always
central to the comings and goings of the series.
And on that, the ending of Chapter III (The Trial…), despite
what looks like a victory, is more or less to those like Faustus and Wardwell a
minor setback, considering a Catholic Baptism was before a Dark Baptism is a
monkey wrench (the sisters are also on opposite ends of this as Sabrina, as a
baby, was promised to “both sides” even though she had no say, her parents did,
without knowing what each other was up to!). Faustus believes, because Sabrina
agrees to attend his school, he’ll “break” her while Wardwell believes a more
subtle, trickier system (going on the attack of her mortal friends, such as Roz,
who is losing her sight) will eventually submit her to Satan. And Daniel
Webster (veteran actor, John Rubinstein), who was tricked by Satan long ago to
give his soul for great success as a lawyer, had a hand in seeing that Sabrina
came out with “dual-citizenship”, at the very least, his history of getting off
the worst of mankind aside, he was able to represent someone far more deserved
of “a fair trial”.
