Game of Thrones - The Purple King
You know I figured The Purple Wedding would give me a rush
of satisfaction but I could only sit with this severe degree of distaste in how
Joffrey treated Tyrion before someone poisoned his goblet as Uncle and Master
of Coin was humiliated and embarrassed over and over with dwarves used to
depict “the five kings” in a performance farce mocking them. Imagine how Sansa
had to feel, sitting there seeing them depict her brother in such a way. She
doesn’t get to truly grieve without Joffrey rubbing her brother and parents’
death in her face. Despicable in every way during his short life, Joffrey
reveled in tormenting not just those he disliked but even his own grandfather,
mother, and “uncle” Jaime. Tyrion was Joffrey’s main target because he knew he
wasn’t on the front lines of Blackwater during the battle when he ordered for
his uncle to be killed…and Tyrion often could cleverly and wittily poke fun at
him. Joffrey didn’t get to wield the second sword born from the melted Valyrian
steel from Ned’s much larger sword very long. He got to cut up a book gift from
Tyrion before dumping wine on his head, insisting he kneel before him. Tywin
and Cersei couldn’t help but be amused while many others at the after-wedding
ceremony weren’t so. The goblet rolled under a table and was handed to him by
Sansa, so that offered the idea that she might have done it…a nice red herring
considering she’d have every reason to do it. But the goblet was on the table
and Olenna eyed it intensely. The camera wasn’t always on the goblet so a
number of folks could have poisoned the wine in the cup. But it was a dying
Joffrey pointing at Tyrion, who lifted the goblet to observe it for poison, and
Cersei considering him the most obvious suspect in her rage and grief that just
further compounded an escalating tragedy. Tragic not because Joffrey was dead—he
was a disease who sat on the Iron Throne way too long—but Tyrion is accused and
arrested for the crime after enduring non-stop, discomforting mockery and
disregard. Joffrey choking, coughing up spit, blood, and poison, as his face
turns a different color, as his breathing eventually halts, the eyes going dark;
there was a camera held on him as he faded into oblivion. Couldn’t have
happened to a more deserving recipient. Too bad Tyrion will be the fingered
suspect due to his antagonistic relationship with Joffrey. The King is Dead.
Long Die the King.
