A is for Amateur -- The ABCs of Death 2
A for Amateur is a surprisingly long opening to the second
ABCs of Death 2 but is so because E.L. Katz shows two scenarios regarding a
hitman and his mark. The first is a Hollywood standard: a well executed plan
plays out as expected with a hired killer secretly moving through air
conditioning ducts to find his target (some low level kingpin who looks more
like a minor drug dealer success story, holed up in a condo with kissing
lesbians and hired security playing Poker), taking him out along with everyone
else in the room.
I wasn't expecting this! |
Well, at least the job was done. |
Then there’s the realistic second scenario where the hired
killer encounters sticky cobwebs, nails sticking out, bugs, garbage, darkness,
debris expected in ducts where air and heat pass through, and tightness that
doesn’t allow him to easily travel to his desired destination. That his success
is accidental is the great irony/humor of the little tale. Okay start. Plays on
hitmen movies, allowing us to see it all go awry. I look for the horror tales
in anthology movies like this so A for Amateur is a decent diversion. To add to
the humor of the tale is that the human target isn’t even all that flashy a
mark; he’s some uncouth, unshaven slob, with a gum-chewing, nail-filing squeeze
and one singular unimpressive security guy. So the hitman could perhaps have
just knocked on the door and killed his target instead of the crawlspace
efforts!
