In the slasher genre, and to a somewhat lesser extent (or maybe not now that the film is whole with its gore intact), the horror genre, My Bloody Valentine (1981) has been synonymous with February 14th. It is hard not to watch this movie during the day at some point just out of routine. At least the routine is not a chore. I quite like this film, and even spoke highly of it among my slasher-loving peers when all the gore was not present. For a long time, I would rent it on occasion just because I liked the plot and characters. I just liked that the people in the film were real and the gloom of the only job economic enough to survive in town was quite vivid and depressing. The local watering hole was the hangout, and there were few options of entertainment available to the youth that might be burdened to work the mines in town. So us from small towns could identify with the characters and their plight...I worked in a factory with assembly lines for 12 years and labored forlornly wondering if this was all I had to look forward to as a career. So the film has merit with me. The mining outfit and pickax certainly give the killer a neat look and hook for marketing My Bloody Valentine to slasher fans. So Valentines Day has its 90 minutes dedicated to this film. Still, I think it is good enough not to be confined to just this one day a year.
