Leatherface III (1990) unrated version (another revisit)
My daughter really liked this when we watched it back on HBO Max a few months back. This time we watched the Unrated cut, but Burr's film was still just hacked of obvious gory bits. Sigh, what can ya do, really?
But she mainly liked this for the same reason I did: Ken Foree. Viggo as Tex still remains a highlight but this Leatherface family just can't compare to the Sawyers of the past two films. The pervert gross Alfredo goes on and on to the point where my daughter was like, "Why is he like that?!" 🤣
The Butler death and planned BBQ of his body is sanitized by MPAA standards and practices so much of Teague and Tex plotting to skin off him or tear into him is never shown. Even when Hodge pulls her nailed hands from a chair and stabs Tex in the back the camera "cuts away". We do see the Bad Seed little blond girl (with her skeleton doll!) stick a wooden nail into Hodge's leg, while also delighting in pulling the string that dislodges a sledgehammer swinging into Butler's head (the actual impact once again cut away). I can't imagine KNB were happy all their gruesome effects were cropped away.
I dig the rock score, it was fun to see Viggo and Foree go at it, that phallic chrome chainsaw looks mighty intimidating (and fucking heavy), and all the nasty body disposal gives us a clear picture of just how busy this psycho family has been.
I really like when Burr shoots the hot desert roads. You can feel the scorching sun. And getting lost out there would suck. Hodge isn't really great at the weepy, crying victim, but physicality-wise, she's a trooper. But Foree is why I like this much. Leatherface has the look down, but I dunno, he's missing something.
