You know The Haunting (1963) has a lot of inner thought narrative. A lot of torment and emotional instability. Julie Harris is quite the neurotic, grabbing a hold to the Hill House knowing that what awaits back home is a family that features a sister who openly antagonizes her, as if purposely trying to drive her mad. Looking after a sick mother for years, the weight and strain would turn most people into a near crackpot. The Hill House, built by a neurotic misfit with plenty of issues documented by the design of its interiors and exteriors, seems like the perfect padded cell for Harris. Wise directed with a camera that bends and warps to the house's will, with its peculiarities sounded and evidenced throughout. It's behavior and Harris' are often one and the same. One of my favorite scenes has Harris walking away from the others, her thoughts drowning out them, as the dark envelopes her...it almost enveloped her early when she is in the house with only Bloom, before Johnson opened the door. Harris' fate at the end is fitting as the house found a kinship with her.
