MBV: Valentines Come Early
Talk about crazy schedules: I watched My Bloody Valentine
(1981) around 2:30 in the morning. My sleeping has been on and off, so I was
awake. It kind of really works about this time, although I’m used to watching
it in the afternoon or late evening. Definitely not early in the morning. I
guess I just wanted to get it in. I think it retains its slasher appeal quite
well. In the past, I have watched this not just on Valentine’s Day. It was
actually a fun fall movie for me. Hell, I even watched it in the summer on occasion.
But its seasonal flavor is quite distinguished. It really does the color red
its due diligence. The plot is simple enough, even if it follows a rather
recognizable formula regarding the possible escaped lunatic who could be on the
loose and heading for the film’s setting, typically a red herring ruse most of
us aren’t fooled by.
Renting the heavily edited version for so many years makes
me appreciate the fully restored version even more. Ached for the whole instead
of the gutted form we liked for the well established location and characters
(and how it doesn’t Americanize its Canadian roots) which maintained a cult
following for My Bloody Valentine, I think this is all we could have asked for
really. It gives us lots of blood…and heart. I’ll do a “Fab Five” for the film
in a few hours…a little addition where I post my five favorite scenes/moments
in the film
