Key Scenes: Obongo Joins the Fun

Overcome by lust, Alice (Romay) needs to let off some steam. Her boytoy, Novio (Mayans), is right by her side sleeping. She needs to dull her restless sexual energy. Obongo wants to have some fun, too, though.

I think one of the film’s most memorable scenes is rather early into the running time. Quite quickly Obongo has slithered into the ether of Alice’s unconscious. Is it the place that Alice and her beau, Novio (Antonio Mayans), inhabit that breeds the emerging “apparition of lust” that is Obongo? Was she once an inhabitant of the place herself, having never truly left? Is she something supernatural or just a figment created through the mania of passion invading Alice, causing her to be lustfully beholden to its ever-increasing presence? In the scene I refer, there’s a development that leans towards Obongo being more than just a fantasy fiction specifically existing within the dream of Alice.

Alice is aroused by what she dreams. It is a fire lit in her. After a dream about Obongo, she turns to Novio and initiates a passionate sexual encounter. It is the kind of especially close hardcore scene where it is clear the two actors are having real sex. It is also clear from this Franco and Romay were a-okay with her performing with guys and girls, and this particular scene goes all-in. What I think sizzles the scene is what Obongo contributes to it. Not only does Alice see Obongo’s face as she is riding Novio, he sees Obongo on top of him! Both are startled yet turned on by her presence! I really liked how Alice sees her, is taken aback, and yet becomes sexually charged by this development. Then Novio looks up and has Obongo, all smiles, greeting him. She has become an active component in their sex life! It is explicit as both participants are completely nude…while the act itself isn’t explicit, it is all but visualized that Romay literally gives Mayans felatio while Franco’s camera admires her energy during it (you don’t see it; it is still implied, but Romay sells its authenticity like a champ.

I think what Romay does well is convey just what Obongo is accomplishing so early into the film. She gets carried away and doesn't seem to defy the entrapment laid out by Obongo. It is a type of embrace, actually. Perhaps there's some resistance, but the scene above would indicate, the turn on of it all exists and is hard to resist. Will Novio embrace it also?
