October 8th - Prom Night 🎃
I was putting together something for another film I had been watching when this was on late in the morning. So every other early morning Redbox channel on Roku TV has been showing Prom Night (1980) and Halloween (1978) together. I have another snapshot from a previous morning I'll also share below. I've never thought of Prom Night as an October movie. As tradition now for the past few years, Prom Night is a May movie, for obvious reasons. But, curiously enough, I've found the film has worked for me. I've never even paired it with Halloween, but I might just, for fun, do this in May next year. It could be the soft lighting used by the director or era that has so often kept me coming back to it working for Prom Night so late. I've been thinking about that, actually. What is it that feels so attractive in October as opposed to when I usually watch it. I wouldn't have even given the film a thought hadn't I come across it on this channel when investigating what Roku had to offer. I was, initially, just interested in watching Halloween on a different channel, this off-channel that is buried way into the streaming periphery of niche.
This was October 2nd, details from my phone needed to remind me |
Early October 2nd, I caught Prom Night right about when Anne-Marie Martin is being chased by the ax-wielding killer in the empty part of the high school. October 8th, I was able to catch most of the film. It is nice to have the film with all the violence visible on screen. The even quick cuts of neck carnage inflicted on teenagers who made a mistake when they were kids, wrought upon them before graduation, since a little girl never got to experience hers. And you can reason, even if you don't agree that murder is the answer, the mental anguish and gradual descent into a psychological need for revenge when watching the grieving mother never able to get over the loss of her child.
