October 5th - Public Television's Halloween Haunted House
I remember in July that I wanted to gin up some Halloween spirit and Shudder was the perfect place for that. WNUF Halloween Special (2013) would appear to be a decaying VHS tape with a haunted house paranormal special on some public television station, with local advertisements, many of which highlight Halloween, as well as, a news program with two hosts dressed in Dracula and witch costumes/makeup. I watched this on a Wednesday evening in the summer. Much like then, I wanted to gin up some Halloween spirit after a rather tiresome Tuesday work day. The segment with Frank Stewart as a house with a similar history to Amityville with two obvious frauds hired for their supposed experience in the paranormal (obviously a proxy for Ed and Lorraine Warrens) and a priest brought in (later revealed to be an actor always uneasy about the role, especially when exorcism is brought up) if "demonic activity needs to be cleansed) really is the most "found footage-y" part of the special. Whoever is watching this tape sometimes will rewind or fast-forward through advertisements or ads of little interest to them, with the quality and age of video showing wear and tear. One segment mentions '87, meaning the tape's special happens during 1987. If you want to feel like you have time-warped back to the 80s and are old enough like I am (44 years old; I would have been ten years old when this is set) to feel the Halloween in 1987 represented in "WNUF Halloween Special", this might just be a real trip down memory lane. I just get a kick out of it. 3/5 (nostalgia pulls me every time).
