American Horror Story: Roanoke - Chapter 4

I totally crapped out on this one. The Lost Colony led by Bates (who later poisons and hacks them up with a hatchet) end up on the property where Matt and Shelby live. Flora is out there, positioned to be sacrificed by Bates under the blood moon. The blood moon allows ghosts who perished (by their own hand or murder) to be very active and strong, with Lady Gaga's witch (brought to The New World and meant to be burned at the stake) "allowing" through her magic for Bates to remain "owner" of the land at Roanoke and leader over her "flock". This settlement isn't bothered when the blood moon isn't there, but Matt and Shelby came to this place at a very bad time. And Cricket makes a critical mistake of returning to the place when he should have stayed away. Seeing Bates disembowel Leslie Jordan is quite hard to get out of your head (much less Jordan squealing while it happens). I mean, Bates hacks at Jordan's gut, then gets a hook to pull out his intestines...yikes was my obvious reaction. Lady Gaga gets her historical back story while Bates also tends to her Lost Colonists looking to break from her, including her son played by Wes Bentley. All must die, including Bates, in order to have their land for eternity. That's quite some serious ownership. Also in the episode is Denis O'Hare, for a little bit, as the professor with plenty of knowledge about the location (the colonists, especially) and that pig-headed, pig-squealing, knife-wielding paranormal psycho running Shelby all through her house. O'Hare tries to help get Flora back for Shelby and Matt but that doesn't go according to plan. Even when Matt tries to confront Lady Gaga's witch, he's no match for her seductive wiles, and only Shelby's cries for help draw her husband out of his state of "possession". The episode certainly has plenty of gore in it, much like the previous episode. O'Hare bombarded with arrows to the chest is memorable, but Bates is the one given plenty of hatchet action while cursing anyone who dares to defy her. 3/5
