iZombie - Brainless in Seattle 1 & 2
**½ / ****
Brainless in Seattle has McIver embodying the persona of a
passionate romantic, deeply attached to rom-coms (like Bridget Jones and its
ilk), and willing to smuggle into Seattle so she can meet up with her online
boyfriend, coming all the way from Kansas. Liv and Clive investigate this young
woman’s demise, with almost her entire brain removed from the skull. With the
bits of brain that remain, Liv eventually realizes that the one responsible for
the victim’s demise is the human-smuggler who drew her in and executed her in a
boiler room (she pushes him towards an oven, resulting in his burning a hand on
the outside of it). Clive and Liv find the boiler room, locating the oven with
several skulls, indicating he’s done this numerous times, a bona fide serial
killer. So as this investigation continues (which soon involved Ravi taking on
the identity of a fake English aristocrat, trapped in Seattle, wanting to
return home, in order to lure the killer to his old killing grounds), Major is
tasked with locating the video of his student’s attack on an originally racist
bully, now “reformed” thanks to Angus’ “new world order” ministry/church. Angus’
message is starting to reach out into the city, drawing in more and more zombie
members. The message is against not only humans but especially Graves’ military
zombies.
There are visits to Blaine’s “why can’t we be friends?” zombie-human meeting establishment, The Scratching Post, where Ravi, Peyton, and Liv can congregate with a crowd of both species. Liv all lovestruck, under the influence of the victim’s romance-driven personality, can be quite fun, especially when trying to initiate a spark between a new female police officer and Clive. Liv has noticed Dale Bozzio flirting and kissing someone at The Scratching Post, disturbed by her brazen openness despite putting on airs (supposedly) of being committed to Clive. But Clive admits to Liv that he agreed to an open relationship with Dale, still a bit taken aback by her decision to go ahead and pursue others while remaining associated with him.
Speaking of association, Blaine kills a chatty, honest-to-a-fault Vietnam vet (recently turned zombie) so he can locate a humane, decent human-smuggler (working humans out of the city as opposed to the killer promising travel in before murdering them), Renegade (Dawnn Lewis), who helped Liv and Ravi get a child out of Seattle to his father in California. Chase Graves realizes thanks to his concerned army that brains supply is dwindling, and he seeks Blaine’s help to secure him Renegade, hoping to stop her helping humans out of the city. When humans die, their brains are available for the zombies that are in Seattle. Blaine gets him Renegade, Graves will discontinue blackmailing him. So the brains of the associate of Renegade cause Blaine to see images of her in the Laundromat, eventually leading him to her. Before this, during the second part of the episode, Blaine has “loose lips”, admitting truths outloud he normally wouldn’t, like his true activities outside the restaurant and his plans for violence! Blaine brings Graves Renegade and is freed from any other obligation…so what will Graves do with Renegade?
Meanwhile Liv gets on Clive and Peyton’s nerves for her wide-eyed, ear-to-ear smiley-face, lovey-dovey personality, even flirting with the suspect in her victim’s death, combing his hair with her fingers and looking deep into his eyes. Liv later goes full mouth kiss with a random pickup she becomes immediately smitten, much to Peyton’s dismay!
The zombie rising following the mania of Angus is to be taken gravely serious, especially recognized by Major and his two pupils when they follow Tucker (Jaren Bartlett), the one with the video of his assault, resulting in his zombie condition, into the church, finding themselves surrounded by a devoted congregation, itching for a reason to pounce. As each fourth season episode continues, Angus’ following shows greater and greater strength, particularly because of Graves’ abusive soldiers.

Oh, and Aly Michalka, a repeat statement on the Darkside blogspot, is a gorgeous woman. Just pointing out the facts, ma'am. Major, though, might want to lay off pro wrestler brains!
