Lost - Pilot Part 2
A thought passed across my mind as I was ironing my clothes
for work no less, that being of just how Lost would be able to alternate their
stories among such an expansive cast. Either the writer’s room would have to
dwindle/whittle down the cast or write it similarly to a soap opera…each week
certain characters take precedence of others. I expected that the supporting
characters drawn with less detail in the first part of the Pilot would get a
bit more focus in the second half. My feeling was right to a certain extent.
Jin-Soo is presented as controlling and demeaning to his
wife, neither of which seems to speak anything but their native Korean (unless
this is but a front so they can keep their dialogue separate from others).
Jin-Soo goes about trying to feed folks some marine food, denying his wife the
chance to eat (he slaps her hand when she makes an attempt to get a piece).
When he goes to Claire to feed her, she is reluctant, eventually eating one
until her infant in the womb kicks. Jin-Soo tries to get away but she grabs his
hand and puts it on her belly as he really looks most uncomfortable.
A running mystery that gets a fun twisty payoff starts with
Sayid and Sawyer in an altercation. Sawyer indicates to his “audience” that he
believes Sayid was a prisoner, creating a level of concern considering his
trustworthiness. Sayid was in the Gulf War, he indicates, but perhaps his
loyalties come under suspicion. Of course Sawyer pretty much calls him a
terrorist while Sayid brushes him off, offering to fix the transceiver and use
it on higher elevated ground…pointing towards a mountain nearby. Kate is to go
with Sayid, but eventually the likes of Charlie, Boone, and Boone’s sister,
Shannon (at first it appeared the two might be boyfriend and girlfriend but
Shannon tells Claire they are siblings) accompany them on the trip up the high
mountain.

The second half of the Pilot seems to really emphasize
secrets. Kate has a secret that is tormenting her. A past that clings her to somebody
else…the individual with the metal shrapnel in his side that Jack plucks out!
Tending to his gaping wound, Jack needs Hurley to be there to assist him if the
injured man pops up. Hurley can’t handle blood, taking a nap at first sight.
That awakening man calls for Kate! The plot thickens!
Smaller scenes include John Locke speaking to Michael Dawson’s
kid about a game older than Jesus Christ, Michael disappointed that his son’s
dog was missing, Charlie revealing he’s an addict (he was on board the plane,
rushing to whatever bathroom he could find, trying to flee the stewardess
suspecting him of suspicious activity), Sawyer revealing he’s got a gun when he
kills a polar bear (!) on the mountain, and a distress signal is captured on
the battery-dying transceiver (that had been sent out for help for over 16
years!).
