Jessica Jones - Camera Friendly
It was inevitable that as Trish involves herself in the ongoing feud between Jessica and serial killer, Salinger, anyone close to her could get not only hurt but killed. Not only does Trish get her mother, Dorothy (De Mornay), killed, but Jeri Hogarth sets her sights on "unmasking" Jessica's "vigilante super". Salinger (Bob) tricks Jessica and Trish into "rescuing" a young woman who favors Jessica in order to torture and kill Dorothy. Salinger provokes Trish to act on the death of Dorothy, with Jessica trying to get to her in time before she kills him. The episode gets really fucking dark by the end, for sure. Jessica destroys awards and diplomas in Salinger's apartment, and he answers by killing Dorothy. This is just an ongoing process of provocation. Salinger isn't a super, so he uses ingenuity and tactics to bamboozle the police -- such as hire some guy that looks similar to him to hang out in his apartment while Salinger is away preparing to get revenge on Jessica and Trish -- while making sure his legal council works on his behalf as well. Jeri clearly finds the vigilante a menace after security footage finds Trish in disguise pulling information from Malcolm's computer. Malcolm's lover and Jeri's assistant, Zaya (Mack), cut that footage of him talking to Trish, questioning him about what she saw. Jeri talks to a member of the press, waging legal war with supers...no one is above the law. That is where Trish has been pushing since becoming a super...that desire to "make a difference" has gotten out of hand. Jessica has been in that same situation, too. Jessica taking the law into her own hands, using her powers instead of getting the police involved. Eventually, Jessica had a come to Jesus with herself and began to cooperate with Detective Costa (Ventimiglia), working with him instead of exclusively outside his purview.
The episode really had some lightheartedness to it before Trish found her mother cut up and dead, tape-bound to a chair, gagged and bloodied. Like Dorothy wanting to have a specially made uniform for Trish and efforts to make Jessica presentable for the media...camera friendly. Trish using a bogus Mother's Day fashion line in order to get Dorothy in front of the camera so she could free herself from the QVC like show. Salinger knows that the only real family Jessica has is Trish and Dorothy (Jessica's "adoption mother"...so how does Salinger get even with Jessica but to go after her only family?
With Trish on the verge of slicing Salinger's throat with sharp glass if Jessica can't stop her and Jeri pursuing her masked vigilante alter ego, the third season is really building up a lot of melodrama. Any time there is a major death of an important character on a series, that is a big deal...shit's gone down. 4/5
