Night Tide / Shudder

So I believe I mentioned on Shudder they have a channel called Slashics. On rotation, there are a few odd ducks such as Beyond the Door (1974) and, particularly, Night Tide (1961). Night Tide isn't what I personally consider a slasher film at all. I think if Shudder had a 60s themed channel, this would be ideal. It is more of a fantasy set in modern early 60s California, with some locations such as Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach with such a young Dennis Hopper as the lovestruck Navy sailor on leave who falls for Mora (Lawson), performing as a mermaid for a carnival, who might very well be the real deal. Her "handler" doesn't take too kindly to this love affair. Now before Hopper, there were some male deaths, so his own welfare could be in jeopardy if he continued to pursue Mora. The carnival on that location in California is just alluring to me.

So it seems like every night when I lay down to bed and turn it to Shudder 's Slashics channel, Night Tide, is on. It's kind of neat because I come into the film at different points. I think the first time I caught it, the film was in the middle. Another time, the sad ending. And the third and forth time, Luanda Anders just lovingly yearns for Hopper with her eyes and demeanor. She tells him about the recent murders and later asks if he will be back after he's out of the Navy. I can tell you that this setting seems like quite a place to settle roots. Maybe not now, but in 1961, there is this California that has some sort of ethereal quality.

I will mention this film again. It might be a blog peculiarity I embrace. The "Night Tide" mention.

This was a scene on when I turned to Slashics just the other night. Quaint and laid back.
