Night of the Lepus / Old Semi-Negative Review
User comments from September 2008:
Giant mutated rabbits are terrorizing Southwest farming community thanks to scientist Roy Bennett's(Stuart Whitman)little girl accidentally releasing a specimen injected with an experimental serum who subsequently mates with the beasts breeding at an alarming rate soon unleashing terror on innocents. It'll be up to Roy and farmer Cole Hillman(Rory Calhoun)to stop them, with a little help from the National guard and local police.
Cornier that corn "animals attack" creature feature with tacky special effects(..basically rabbits blown up by the camera running around throughout a model), and sincere performances from a serious cast make this game viewing for aficionados of bad cinema. DeForest Kelley has a supporting role as a relative of the Bennetts, Roy and Gerry(Janet Leigh), who assists them in their goal to kill the monster killer rabbits. Lots of bloody victims and victims being pounced on with quick cut-aways keeping the viewer from realizing just how unrealistic the bunny attacks are. Why Janet Leigh is in this is anyone's guess. The standoff at the end where train tracks are used as a source for electrocuting the rabbits is a laugh-riot of terrible special effects. A drop-dead serious newcast at the opening offers prophetic doom towards our future thanks to the possible growth of animals such as the rabbits of this film. It only adds a distinct charm to this flick. Often the director shoots the scurrying monster rabbits in slow motion giving them an actual growl. Hilarious stuff.
My write-ups in the past definitely had a mean spirit sometimes. I like to include them on the blog, though, for posterity. It lets me know how I somewhat evolve, grow up, and mellow out. I gave this a 5/10 last time. Generous but I can't help it. I have a soft spot for it.
