The Vampire Diaries - Homecoming
With the family drama of the Originals ongoing, their antics soon to involve the Mystic Falls gang is no surprise, but I continue to remain amused at how Elena just has this creative room immunity (often quite far-fetched), in how they continue to rescue her from one sure threat after another. Holt's casting has been quite pleasant for me, as I imagine she (and her brother) is for others when the series was on the CW.
So the newly concocted plan, by papa himself, Mikhail, is to lure Klaus back to Mystic Falls through the use of Rebekah, who had learned of his deception of her, leaving her shaken emotionally. She's reluctant, obviously (as she tells Elena, she loves him but also hates what he has done to her, while she also holds Mikhail accountable for turning them into killers, as well), but sure enough Elena is able to convince her it is the right thing to do. Portland, Oregon, as told to us by Klaus as this appears to be the ideal location to find healthy young people he can turn into hybrids, is where he had spent time away from Mystic Falls, so being told his father is available to do away with by his sister is too irresistible (it seems) to pass up. Under his control, the setup would need to assure them that Stefan couldn't lie to his master, so it would need to be planned out without his letting the cat out of the bag. A special dagger is available to truly destroy the entire body not just hold the Original stabbed in a "subdued" state, so Mikhail plans to use it on Klaus. Mikhail entrusts the stab to his torso in order to trick Klaus with Elena, while Damon also has a backup plan all his own. Klaus being removed from the picture just isn't likely, due to being such an antagonist, so how he'll finagle a homecoming dance moved from the school to Tyler's then stock the party with booze and hybrids, looking to ensure that he'll not be endangered (including an order to kill Damon if he is harmed). Katherine had been forgotten since unearthing Mikhail and seemingly drawn into his crypt to be cattle to bleed. But she does arrive back into the show in a big way, once again proving her loyalty to Stefan at the detriment of her own safety.
Klaus, with Stefan's help, getting rid of his father, freeing his "servant" from the enchantment should come as no real surprise. His "I'm smarter than everyone else" shtick, so smarmy, wholly confidant, with such feelings of superiority-all of that taking a hit is especially satisfying, although, Stefan surprising him by "stealing his family" will be short-lived, as Mikhail's pursuit of his son after being freed from his coffin. Still we rarely see Klaus upended, so Stefan doing so (one of his main victims, forced to torment but be always in the presence of Elena) gives us minor bliss. Elena and Damon seemingly drawing closer should be of no surprise due to how Stefan has been such a dick to Elena, and this season really changed course on Stefan's character, going an alternate route that made him quite hard to stomach. Even still, Klaus remains the lead prick, with Stefan sort of the ying to his yang. The plan to kill Klaus, I can't imagine very many bought that bill of goods for a second, though. So that obviousness does kind of take some fangs from the bite, with Mikhail's demise a minor shocker. I guess Mikhail's brief run on this show was to be expected, although I personally thought he'd be around a little longer. Also featured is Tyler's gung-ho attitude for basically being Klaus' pet because he doesn't have to worry about the full moon's control and the agony that results from it, leaving Caroline not particularly happy with him, ultimately rejecting his appeal to her to remain an item. Flirting with Matt and Rebekah being a potential item doesn't even leave the starting gate thanks to Elena's lack of trust in the sister of her main adversary. I've just got to say that Claire Holt--Rebekah--in that red dress...Matt would have been quite taken aback had Elena not ruined it! Seeing a more vulnerable Rebekah was a nice change of pace and Klaus' eyes tell a lot of hurt when his father emasculates him even if his bravado tries to hide it. Just the same, Klaus does get his revenge on this man who has made sure to remind him for centuries of his own past mistakes.
The writing team once again has to pull multiple rabbits out of their hat to keep the story arc going, but credit to them for the number of twists and turns they factor into the conclusion of the episode.
