BattlestarGalactica - Miniseries Part 2*

The second part of the miniseries lends its focus to Battlestar Galactica and the colonial ships (carrying 50,000, left of millions who were massacred) it is assigned to protect needing to escape from the space where they made a pit stop for armory supplies and the knowledge that cylons can exactly mimic humanoids of their own race making them difficult to detect (or find).

Baltar walking around with Tricia Helfer popping up in his mind at the most disconcerting and inopportune times (perhaps, she hints, a chip was implanted in him so that she isn’t a hallucination of the guilt-stricken mind but an actual intruding program that can surface whenever she decides to. Interestingly Helfer’s presence indicates to Baltar that a cylon masquerading as human is on the BG, leading to his investigation into finding the culprit, also instrumental into his escaping his own responsibility in the inadvertent involvement in the near-extinction of his race by inserting himself, when called upon by Commander Adama (after his own encounter with a cylon disguised as a black market trader found in the Ragmar weapons station, resulting in a struggle Adama is ultimately the victor), into helping identify an actual saboteur on the ship (although he swears he’s human, there are certain indicators once tested that closely ties to the cylon Adama killed).

President Roslin having to make the first of what will undoubtedly be many tough, gut-wrenching decisions has no choice but leave behind the Colonial ships that don’t have faster-than-light (often referred to as FTL) capabilities. The show goes for a gut punch by having those in Colonial ships being left behind taking Roslin and Lee Adama’s led FTL ships to task for doing so while a little girl (expecting to have dinner with her parents, who are dead, and go to bed afterward) awaits her trip back home, not knowing she’s about the eviscerated (all the while playing with a doll!). Roslin wants to make sure Commander Adama realizes her vision of a continuing government and the need to breed and multiply their heavily decreased species. There’s a scene on the bridge where Adama looks over at Dualla (Kandyse McClure) speaking with Billy (Paul Campbell), Roslin’s assistant about a kiss they shared earlier, realizing that she’s right. Also realizing that Roslin’s right about the inability to just combat the cylons once repairs are done, needing to focus on leaving their charted solar system for parts unknown (and uncharted), Adama decides they will need to spacejump in order to survive and repopulate somewhere else where the enemy will not find them. So he does listen even as Roslin’s assertive nature (although done with a calm and resolve, always approaching each situation with delicate but mature (and sober) intellect and thought) does irk him a bit. Roslin’s cancer, a character detail of great importance revealed when she’s introduced in the first part seeing her doc at Caprica, will certainly be a problem for her also going forward.
