For Whom The Island Tolls...

When Jin and Sun were able to reunite I was exhilarated. It was a long time coming. In The Candidate, they die together, drowning in Widmore’s sub, never able to reunite with the daughter left behind in Korea. Pinned by sub “shrapnel” and unable to escape no matter how hard she and Jin try, Sun tells her husband to get out while he can as the water floods inside. There is a dramatic shot of Jin and Sun’s hands parting underwater in a final punch to the gut (not a tug on the heartstrings but a literal jerk) for ultimate effect. Prior to this, Sayid grabs a timebomb that was about to go off, running direct for a distance away from Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and “Kwon”. Those operating the sub are “subdued” instantly as the bomb goes off and poor Lapidus gets taken out by a metal door (“Ah, Hell.”). So Kwon die from drowning, Sayid is blown up, and Lapidus is taken out by a door. Lost certainly sees fit to dump excess baggage to them. The Sideways remains to give their alternate selves some remaining screen time, though. I thought I would be more impacted by the deaths of all of them, but the yo-yo effect of this show has jerked me about quite a bit…there is just not much left to draw out of the ole well. I guess once they embraced one last time, promising no longer to part and again reiterating their love for each other, I was granted a last desire fulfilled. It was a given that not long following this they’d be drowned in a sub. To be expected I guess on a series dealing with a maniacal brother who occupies a deadly black smoke monster because Jacob sent him into a glowing tunnel (a very special “light”), fed thanks to a rushing rocky river on the island! Just reading that to myself…Cuse and Lindelof really spun quite a yarn with Across the Sea, the Jacob/Man in Black origin story (involving, much to my surprise, Allison Janney as this resident on the island, whose own back story is not related to us, nor the mother of Jacob and his brother, washed ashore after shipwreck pregnant and ready to give birth) that I’m still not sure I really care for all that much. Still, Kwon has met their end, as has Sayid and Lapidus. Bidding adieu to them with little show left does provide the expected sadness and sense of loss considering the time spent with them and their stories. It has been quite a ride. At least Sayid was able to go out not only with a bang but in heroic fashion and Lapidus died quickly. Sadly the same couldn’t be said for poor Kwon.

1_Considering the experience has been, for the most part, exhilarating and worthwhile (lots of surprises and character development through six years of episodes!), knowing I have the series finale just in sight is, admittedly, gratifying. It has been quite a journey since I started the series in October (when it was still on Netflix) to now (in January I was fortunate enough to continue the series thanks to a friend supplying me access to borrowed Blu-ray sets), but the feeling of completion gives me great appreciation for the long ride and all that has entailed. All that said, I’ve given a lot to the show and I’m more than ready to cover many other film and series. I have spent a great bit of time with Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Locke, and the gang; it is time to exhale and divert energies elsewhere.
