Look, we didn't go into this with any ridiculous expectations. My family were having a good enough time without critiquing it's relevance in comparison to the two Ghostbusters films involving Murray, Ramis, Aykroid, and Hudson. If anything, I thought the female casting was the 2016 reboot's greatest asset. Even when the material wasn't deserved of its talent, the girls just the same brought serious comic chops and impeccable timing certainly helpful in wringing laughs from dialogue that needed their assistance. I did feel the special effects were a bit overproduced, but the ladies--Wiig, Jones, McCarthy, and McKinnon--still gamely forge ahead. Like the giant Macy's Parade "ghost balloons" which make little sense (why do they exist again?). Or the giant winged creature in the rock concert. Chris Hemsworth gets to mock his beefcake image while Wiig's scientist damn near drools everytime he's in her presence. Jones, who seems to be under hideous and unwarranted racist scrutiny by certain media forums proving that certain members of society should be called to task for their scumbaggery, effortlessly makes her character fun and energetic. If McKinnon wasn't so expressionistic and didn't make such mincemeat with the character dynamic afforded her (the inventor who gets the create all types of paranormal weaponry, given all the cool gadgets from the prop department), Jones might have walked away with the film. Slimer and the StayPuff Marshmallow Man have cameos like the remaining former members of the original cast Ghostbusters (1984). Even the likes of Charles Dance (as Wiig's university boss), Ed Begley, Jr. and Zach Woods as employer and host of a haunted historical house of certain notoriety, and Andy Garcia as the NYC mayor offer fun parts in support. A lot of physical comedy and camera depending on expressive reactionary humor. Do I think it will go the distance and endure like the original? I doubt it, but as a summer diversion you could do worse than spending time with the four comediennes seen in this film. Their effort is commendable. As for the critics so vehemently against this? Chill out. You still have the first two to return to...allow a new generation to have their own.
