Since late August, I have really been watching my share of 80s movies. It kind of started with the slasher series I had and then went into many of the films I grew up with. That will continue until October has me returning to the gothic classics that are my passion and joy. I have been working on two current themes for this month, movies associated with Linnea Quigley and films directed by Russ Meyer. While these themes have produced some rather odd and often fun experiences (and even painful), I have really been jonesing on the films that were a fond part of my video childhood. That will continue, although I'm excited about finally getting to see a few movies that have eluded me...Incubus (a movie I hear and have read many wished they would have avoided) and Death Ship, both considered less-than-stellar. I have read that Cassavetes (an actor whose films I'm quite a fan of, especially Woman Under the Influence & Faces, although Husbands annoyed me) took the acting job of Incubus to make Love Streams. Anyway, I have read from those who have seen it, that the movie seemed to express in his performance that he wanted to be elsewhere. I figure some might sadly remember Cassavetes as that guy whose head exploded thanks to his angering Andrew Stevens in The Fury. Death Ship has one of those awesome posters that Ghost Ship (2002) ripped off, and a cast (George Kennedy and Richard Crenna) I really find interesting. I always like to return to House (1986) because it came during a difficult childhood, kind of snug in the middle, that was a fond and happy period. I guess that's where the horror fan's beginnings were. While I consider the Universal movies the founding influence in why I'm a horror fan today, movies like House and The Stepfather and Dawn of the Dead and Evil Dead II were all Video Rental Store (or movies recorded by my favorite uncle off of HBO, borrowed from him on several occasions) gems that latched on and took hold. This has been a nice set up for October, at any rate. Thanks for stopping by this here blog and reading...
4th of July 2025 Marathoning
McDowell and Comi prepare to leave for Mars. Aliens visiting the UN, dropping off their cook book, providing goodies for humans on Earth, easing them into trusting them, spiriting them away to be food for them on their home planet. To Serve Man is nearly 60 years ago. I've been watching Twilight Zone since I was a teenager in the mid 90s thanks to Sci Fi Channel. Many of my family have passed since (for instance, my mother's siblings are all about gone except one last sister), and it wouldn't be right to avoid a marathon during the 4th if just for nostalgic reasons. Syfy didn't see the value of TZ on Independence Day, except last year, so even though I cannot watch episodes like I do during New Year's Eve and Day, it is nice to try and sneak in a block of episodes whenever possible. I started with Death Ship from the fourth season, continuing with Stopover in a Quiet Town and The Gift . To Serve Man would feel like a later afternoon watch but SYFY showed it at 3:...
