It's October, Baby! Tales from the Cryptkeeper & Addams Family Kickoff
In the Wayback Machine:
How about adding Tales from the Cryptkeeper to your October
Schedule? To market the Cryptkeeper to kids, there is a far more palatable
horror show for the tykes while the adults could get their ghoulish delights on
HBO back in the day. As a “soft opening” for the very first day of October, I
opened with a harmless episode of the 1990s cartoon, titled “Pleasant Screams”
about a Latin teacher and one of his students seemingly trapped in the
never-ending nightmare of a sleeper in his class wanting to transfer to
Creative Writing. You have zombies rising from their graves in a cemetery, a
two-headed lizard monster terrorizing Tokyo with its rampage (and an Ultraman
knockoff in Dynaman), winged gargoyles at a castle, a green blob in a lake, and
a stone brute wielding a axe…all these threatening the cowardly teacher and his
female student, both always trying to stay ahead but never able to get away.
But despite peril around every turn, they never die, soon realizing that a
faceless boy is a student in the teacher’s class. You still get some horror
zingers from Kassir as a far more sanitized Cryptkeeper, not a rotten, skeletal
corpse in the cartoon. Although mild, the girl, Jenny, nearly gets her head
sawed into by a spinning blade on a table, both her and Mr. Purty are hurled
into one of the lizard’s mouths, and the zombies pulled them into a darkened
gate…so there’s plenty of gasp-warranted moments for the kiddos. You could do
worse. **½
“Maybe a little dreadtime story can scare up a good fright
to rest.”
Hope you have an awesome Halloween Month!!!
Rating system for the month of October below. I'll have my Halloween Banner up this evening.
**** - Great
*** - Good

Skip Homeier and Don Rickles are bank robbers who need a place to hide, inadvertently stumbling on the grounds of the Addams. While Gomez cuts a Jacko'lantern supposedly in the likeness of Uncle Fester, the cops are out, their sirens always alerting Homeier and Rickles they are nearby, closing in. Rickles is more nervy scaredy-cat and perplexed while scar-faced Homeier tries to steer them towards the exit when the coast is clear. Meanwhile Gomez and Morticia are very inviting, clueless to their true criminal natures. Lurch holds his usual miserable, pained expression, unless playing the harpsichord, as Fester does his bright lightbulb in-the-mouth gimmick. There's bobbing for large crab and hide-and-seek (the latter a curious game to the Addams) as Homeier and Rickles look to steal Gomez' stash of cash in a drawer. Thing gives the robbers trouble when they aren't looking, taking Homeier's gun and replacing it with a banana and locking the door so they can't get out. Morticia lets be known to anyone who listens, Halloween isn't just celebrated one time a year. Pugsly and Wednesday are out trick'r'treating with Grandma during the episode. While I don't necessarily laugh out loud during this show, classic horror fans with a dark sense of humor should enjoy almost every episode and Morticia with her serious face despite often saying absurd things are why I think it remains relevant. How outsiders react to the family is often amusing, such as Lurch and his sinister height, voice, and eyes. I'm very light on content today but I thought this show and specific episode fit the holiday nicely. ***
When we're together, darling, every night is Halloween.
