The Vampire Diaries - All My Children
Damon and Stefan must make a difficult decision in All My Children…Elijah confronts Elena about what it
is she lied to him about when asked what Esther was meeting her about. He could
tell of her deceit by hearing how her heartbeat changed when asked. So Elijah
drops her into an underground lair while Rebekah (for whom he protected Elena
from in Dangerous Liaisons before Rebekah could take a bite out of her) keeps
an eye on her. At a certain point when the moon is at its fullest, and all the
witches’, both “on the other side” and Bonnie with her mother, Abby, power is
drawn from Esther, within the “magic circle”, son, Finn Mikaelson, by her side,
will set in motion the end of all Esther’s children. But Elijah won’t stand for
it: he issues an ultimatum to the Brothers Salvatore and that is to kill either
Bonnie or Abby if they don’t want Elena to die at the hands of Rebekah. Damon
and Stefan converse on who it will be: Damon, of course, ultimately chooses to
be the “heel”. Abby, a vampire bite, and Bonnie must tend to her, while Elena
is spared [shocker, I know!] with Rebekah admitting she’ll enjoy watching her
continuing to suffer. The rivalry between Elena and Rebekah, all that animosity
and hate for the knife in the back, is also pure soap opera. Damon and Rebekah
going at it hard at the end of Dangerous Liaisons,
waking up, and Elena arriving the next morning at the beginning of All My Children, reinforces the entanglements that further
complicate all of these relationships. Damon and Rebekah never appeared to be
anything more than hot sex that wouldn’t amount to much. In 1912, this is more or less confirmed when Rebekah
arrives at the Grille and Damon sort of dismissively uninvites her presence
while he and Stefan drinks.
In this episode, the binding of the Mikaelsons mean that
when one is harmed they all are. So when Alaric attacks Kol who is making moves
on Meredith, exiting the Grille, you see Rebekah fall, leaving a brief chance
for Elena to escape to an area in the underground where she is protected by a
witch’s seal against vampire presence. Klaus weakening when flirting with
Caroline, realizing she isn’t responsible, he gets to Alaric, Stefan, and Damon
before they can truly do away with Kol. It will indeed be the Brothers
Salvatore having to protect the Mikaelsons in order to keep Elena safe. That
means Abby is toast while Bonnie is once again hurt because of Elena’s safety.
Elijah, no matter how he might feel about Klaus, can’t
accept his demise, or the demise of his family, no matter how much of a point
his witch mother might have of ending the curse by ending them. So he resorts
to drastic measures, kidnapping Elena, but still keeping Rebekah from hurting
Elena. He even leaves a letter for Elena to let her know of his regret in
having to go that route. But if anyone understands the efforts to protect those
you love, she does. Elena always makes it out of one bad situation after
another because of those who care about her and wish to protect her. And she is
always willing to sacrifice herself for her friends and family. In 1912, she is
willing to break into Meredith’s house and try to find whatever might help her
rescue Alaric. Elena doesn’t want Elijah to perish, which is why the guilt of
participating at all with Esther in her plans of the celestial blood ritual bothered
her to the point that she had to discuss alternatives with Damon and Stefan,
both of whom felt that Esther was doing the right thing. Elijah saw how special
Elena was so her safety was a priority to him, but not at the cost of his own
family. But his own family are vampires, predators for the most part who don’t feel
humans are all that worthy of any real consideration. 4/5
