The Morning After has
arriving Langdon informing the survivors holing up inside Venable’s Outpost 3
that the other Outposts were overrun by “feral cannibals” leading to massacres
of those staying in them. It seems that the Outposts aren’t as secure as
Langdon’s mentioned “The Sanctuary”, provided extra protections these setup
locations didn’t have. Langdon informs those in Outpost 3 that there are a few
spots available for whoever he decides is worthy to come with him to The
Sanctuary. Let all of them stab each other in the backs in order to not stay
behind. At the end of the episode, Venable still seems to wield her own type of
whip (it didn’t work on Gallant because he likes the pain of the whip, and sex
with some guy in a leather gimp suit would more often than not mean the penalty
of “severe punishment”), as young lovers, Timothy and Emily, must “answer” for
their “fornication”. When Ms. Mead is shot at the end as Timothy avoids a
bullet to the head, not able to thwart the strength of Venable’s hulking security
woman, Emily screams out…Mead realizing she has white blood and a wound that
reveals something about her that is “not quite human” leaves us quite [well, I’m
guessing a good many of us] baffled. That Gallant follows the rubber-suited
mystery man who fucked him doggy, throws him on the bed, and pretends to
potentially “return the favor” instead using scissors as a stabbing implement,
Langdon arriving to surprise him, only to reveal Evie’s mutilated body, I think
that most viewers probably were left with mouths agape. I don’t think at the
point after multiple installments of American Horror Story that anything should
shock us anymore…we just roll with the outré developments and revelations,
hoping for some type of resolution. Jennifer Lynch directed this very
effectively, her use of candlelight sort of auburning the environs while dark
corridors could lead to any number of horrors. The door to Venable’s quarters
seemingly shutting with a sinister thud while her austere presence, disguising
emotional trauma Langdon exposes to the viewer when he quietly demands with his
calm, devious tenor for her to “remove her dress” to see a secret, ultimately
unzipping the back to reveal a malformed spine…he asks if she has pain, I
guess, to torment her, and when she hopes she “passed” his “test”, he whispers insidiously,
“No.” Oh, and we can’t go an episode of AHS without plenty of snide insults,
venomous ridicule, and ongoing biting comments that would sting if all of those
in attendance weren’t self-absorbed, morally dubious assholes. Gallant does
admit he just wanted his grandmother to love him, but Evie only cares about
getting to The Sanctuary. Her “memoirs” about meeting various celebrities of
the past just leave those around her, especially the abrasive, loud, toxic
Coco, unamused, rolling their eyes. Dinah doesn’t ever necessarily ask for Coco’s
savage commentary on her age and “being past her prime”. It is often quite ruthless.
And Evie just totally okay with spilling the beans to Mead (and eventually this
goes to Venable) about Gallant taking it hot and heavy from the rubber leather
dude, admitting to her grandson that she told on him to survive, more concerned
about her own safety than his (she doesn’t mince her willingness to betray him
to Mead, taking no pause after finding Gallant in his state of “bliss”,
immediately in tattle-tale mode), perfectly encapsulates the kind of cross
section of characters congregated in Venable’s House.
The snakes at the beginning, emerging from
plates still alive when they seemed chopped up as stew certainly would appear
to indicate some type of witchy activity might be afoot. Langdon and Gallant…interesting
pair. It would seem that they have a “vibe” (as said by Gallant who is turned
on by him), but Langdon assures him that he wouldn’t give Gallant the time of
day, denying visiting him in a leather zipper gimp suit. Langdon’s laptop,
discovered by snooping Timothy and Emily, with email revealing Venable’s “transgressions”
as head of the Outpost 3 and possible upcoming “punishment”, could very well
indicate that despite his intentions when voicing to those inside this building
candidates for The Sanctuary he’s perhaps hiding plenty. Fornication decided by
Timothy and Emily shouldn’t be outlawed, seemingly only created by Venable not
her superiors, which is why they decide to fuck. Who knows what is legal or illegal,
who will survive if anyone? 2.5/5
