Scream: Resurrection - The Man Behind the Mask
The Man Behind the Mask gets
us there. Liv and Deion making out and “going all the way”. I bet cop dad won’t
be pleased! And the most gruesome scene in the series has Marcus removing the
Ghostface costume as he opens Deion with the knife. This after Deion found Liv
dead in the bed next to him. Then waking up, Deion and Jamal see that their
father arrived. Jamal and father are estranged, separating on not such
favorable terms. Jamal lays the truth on Deion that Marcus is not alive. Amir
legitimately wants to be friends with Beth, but she is elusive, offering
resistance to his willingness to be there for her despite the kind gesture.
Beth is always “these are the rules in horror” while Kym tries to undermine her
by saying their situation is a “reboot”. The script is full of this on the series.
Deion “borrows” Liv’s car, after getting the Ghostface phone
call, with the detention club following after and eventually catching up with
him. The salvage yard seems to be where Deion feels obligated to pursue.
Outside the city, they encounter a gas station seemingly located in rural
racism central complete with Confederacy loyalists riding in a truck that horns
General Lee. Kym, of course, butts heads with them, the verbal sparring with
their leader instigating tense looks and warnings. Kym’s tire was stabbed by Liv
in order for them to be left behind, but that leaves Kym believing the guys she
despises did it. Manny wants to diffuse the situation and Kym takes him to task
for not helping her “fight the rednecks”. So Manny takes his frustrations out
on the side of her car and Kym leaves him and Beth behind! Her tire still flat,
trying to “get back to civilization”, Kym is greeted less than ceremoniously by
the three racists in their truck.
Hookman (Vietnam vet, Luther Thompson), in his salvage yard,
doesn’t like that Deion and his friends arrive on Halloween. Luther shows Deion
the burial place of his brother informing them that he couldn’t be Ghostface.
Marcus had hidden in the trunk of a junker, afraid of Luther, while Deion ran
off. The police barely bothered to look for him very long. What Ghostface did
was have Deion confront the real
truth. This was when I offered the idea that perhaps Jamal was Ghostface.
Luther had left Deion, but returned telling him Ghostface was near. While Deion
goes for help, Luther tries and fails to win an altercation with Ghostface,
left in his car compactor, crushed by the compressor! Hook can’t best the
blade.
Ghostface covers a lot of ground, it seems. After Kym
crashes into a cornfield, Manny follows, with a car jack rod in hand, scaring
off the rednecks with just one shot to the arm of the leader! They were all
talk, it would appear. Manny doesn’t find Kym in the field, instead walking
right into Ghostface, trying to flee into Kym’s car, trapped inside. Ghostface
sets some stalks on fire and Kym’s car goes up! So one among the detention club
is checked off the victim list. When Deion informs his mom that Marcus is dead
and tells Jamal that he’s now the only brother he has left, the score builds to
a crescendo and mom tells her son she just can’t let his twin go. As the series
continues there has been a lot of jump scare music relied upon. This series,
much like Wes Craven’s own films, follows that formula to the letter. 2.5/5
