Ju-on 2
Toshio and Koyoko. The unborn. Masashi's in a coma.

Watching Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-on 2, I have to say I like the idea of the simple ghoul approach towards setting up the trauma for the lead female character. Solving the mystery of the grudge curse always seems to be the major incentive creatively when watching Ju-on movies. In this sequel to Shimizu’s popular Ju-on, the lead is a television/movie star, pregnant and engaged, her vehicle crashed thanks to the ghoul kid, Toshio (Yuya Ozeki), son of the vengeful spirit, Kayako. Toshio had a nice grip of the steering wheel, with Kyoko (Noriko Sakai), in the passenger seat (her fiancĂ© driving), causing the car to veer off the road, crashing, with our heroine barely escaping with her life (the fiancĂ©, not so lucky). Masashi (Ayumu SaitĂ´) is the unfortunate victim of the curse. He “hit something”, a cat, but it was the wrong cat. The opening really sets up the rest of the film because this woman is immediately hurled into a terribly dark place by not Kyoko but Toshio. Interesting, isn’t it? Particularly, it is Toshio who is sort of there as a harbinger of doom not the one who actually causes the doom. Losing both your fiancĂ© and child is really hard to return from without some trauma, without some baggage. It certainly ought to give her some motivation to understand how this happened to her.
