My son wanted to watch The Peanuts Movie (2015) on Tuesday much to my surprise. We watched the Halloween and Thanksgiving specials found in most Walmart's Season packages now prior to this and the Christmas special I actually have planned for Thanksgiving Day. I'm all over the map this year, I realize. In 2015 my kids and I went and seen The Peanuts Movie during the first week of December (the last week the film would be shown in one of the theaters we frequent in a city where we live), just the three of us, all by ourselves. It was a parental experience I cherish. Just us appreciating Peanuts. I love Peanuts and I was proud my kids do as well. I felt the film did Charles Schulz justice. Those involved in the film, going the CGI route instead of cartoon animation, really understand what made Peanuts such an endearing, iconic comic strip and cartoon.
I have to say, though, that the theatrical experience we enjoyed didn't quite translate well to a flatter screen at home, particularly Snoopy's "Red Baron adventures" where he's trying to come to the rescue of a female pup up against a bunch of enemy planes. It was quite exhilarating in the theater, even as Snoopy was on top of his doghouse while in flight. Linus' plane "jumpstarted" by Charlie Brown, seen numerous times in flight before ultimately shredding Chuck's book report, Chuck's crush on a redheaded girl who gives him a smile when telling him that he's so much more than just a walking accident, his good qualities (not taking credit for Peppermint Patty's 100 test grade, an ongoing thread during the film because it was Chuck enduring a school year of positive recognition, his helping his sister who is bombing during a talent show while pretending to be a bull of her which interferes with his own magician set), and Chuck's misadventure with a kite. Lucy still charges for advice to Chuck, Schroeder is still trying to avoid Lucy, Peppermint Patty still focuses on sports and fails to hear those trying to talk to her about important subjects (Marcy hopes to convince her to focus on a book report, and Patty can't even stay awake long enough to realize her test grade was the highest in class), and Charles' rush to talk with the girl of his dreams interrupts his friends and sister at the amusement park. I loved that this covers a school year including holidays that fall within it. Charlie Brown's enduring one bad mishap after another only to be accepted by the girl he has been smitten with is a story I was invested in. I love the poor kid, I really do. And poor Snoopy not getting to attend class with the kids...how could I not root for the pooch? 4/5
