I think one thing that really kind of stood out to me was how I believe certain horror fans might immediately have Scream (1996) conjured up in their mind as the first victim (Amber Tamblyn, who would return to be the lead in the rather underwhelming, The Grudge 2) is moving about through the house while her best friend is elsewhere. The television comes on, the refridgerator door creaks open, and there's a suspicious water pooling on the floor outside her bedroom. Cue the open bedroom door, the television on, and the curse taking Ms. Amber out of the film.
The opening mention of the video tape does have me going to that good ole mainstay: Bloody Mary. As children, I remember calling upon her with my siblings in the bathroom late at night. The Ring touches on this, as Candyman (1990) once did. A video tape with a curse on it, if viewed, offers a remaining life of seven days. Get your affairs in order, because "the girl from the well" is coming for your very soul. Bloody Mary, if called, is coming to get you, so just don't do it. The same for the video tape. The curious can't resist, as my example of calling *her name* in the mirror of my old childhood home three times back as a kiddo.
