A Discovery of Witches - Preparations
[3/5]
So I’ve reached the seventh “chapter” (episode) of A Discovery of Witches, the Shudder/Sundance/AMC series from 2018 revived for AMC, allowing me a chance to sample the series. I have already mentioned in the past on the blog that this reminds me of The Vampire Diaries and Twilight. It features Goode (who is 41) and Palmer (33), which actually appealed to me personally because the aforementioned content goes for a much younger demo typically.
In thebuild up to this episode, Diana Bishop learns she was spellbound, her parents responsible for “hiding” her powers so that Knox couldn’t realize just how incredible a witch she was. It cost her parents their lives. Knox badly wants to “study” Diana, as does The Congregation. Diana understands she must learn to control her powers while her aunt, Sarah (Kingston), wants to help, her own feelings hurt because Diana’s parents didn’t trust her with knowing that their child was indeed spellbound as a child. Diana truly never realized just how special a witch she was.
This episode reveals that her father was able to “timewalk”, and that Diana soon learns she can as well, disappearing in a moment of anger, reemerging in the barn outside. A threat to Diana and Matthew’s relationship (besides Knox and Satu, Gerbert, and Matthew’s own brother) emerges in the form of Gerbert’s subservient vampire, Juliette (Elarica Johnson). Juliette’s obsession with Matthew is exploited by “player of all sides”, Domenico. Domenico manipulates her into leaving behind Gerbert (who tries to lie to Baldwin about his actions against Diana) to confront Diana, wanting her removed so she can have Matthew.
Matthew is trying to train Diana to access her powers as protection against vampires that might wish to harm her (she pulls a flying trick on him that is neat), eventually resulting in the two embracing and eventually sleeping together. Sarah’s lover, Em (Pettiford), knew about the spellbinding, and serves as a major support for Diana as she and Matthew visit their home in Madison. Soon Matthew’s “kids”, Miriam and Marcus (Alysha Hart and Edward Bluemel), arrive at Madison, and Sarah couldn’t be more bothered with the foreknowledge that eventually The Congregation would come calling. I loved the episode for one major reason: MAGIC HOUSE. Sarah and Em’s house often acts out when “upset” and can even reveal the past to those in the house, particularly Diana’s parents actions resulting in their deaths due to defying Knox. The walls shake, and even a vanilla envelope left for Diana reveals a page from the manuscript, a clue from her father regarding a destiny not quite yet realized. Baldwin, meanwhile, tries to keep The Congregation at bay, although Satu returns to Knox, her powers practically moot, understanding that Diana was spellbound. A lot of moving parts in the episode, for sure. And Diana is at the center of it all. Now if she can just hone all of that magic pent up in her and unruly…
