Soledad: Seductive Siren of the Screen
I agree with others this is a re-working of Dracula by Jess Franco,
updating the oft-filmed story to an island (and society) where nude
bodies and performance art were welcome and accepted, freedom from
oppressive sexuality existed, and the count was a countess in the
petite siren form of fashion cult icon, Soledad Miranda. While I think
Eugenie de Sade, She Killed in Ecstasy, and The Devil Came from Akasava
all have their key moments highlighting Miranda's seductive and
charismatic screen presence, most feel Vampyros lesbos is her chief
film role cementing her status as a cult figure. She is featured in a
rather recognizable part (somewhat sizeable) in Nightmares Come at
Night. What is so tragic about her death is that her career was still
ahead of her. I always wonder where she would have went had she lived.
Lina Romay kind of "replaced" her, but Soledad will always be the
actress who worked for Franco I prefer the most. While I am the most
aroused by Miranda in Eugénie, it is hard not to assign Vampyros lesbos
to the actress when you think of her overall work as a seductive
figure. She was certainly hard to keep the eyes of away from in Count
Dracula (1970), a film I have been planning to do a write-up on in the
certain future.
