Dawna the Dead (2008) |
I have to say that when I got a copy of
Dawna the Dead (2008)I
wasn’t expecting hardcore porn. Imagine my surprise when the dead rose and
started having their way with girls in the wrong cemetery on the wrong night. I
was never big on average joes and regular gals performing in 70s porn so even
though this is a sort of “return to form”, that aspect of
Dawna the Dead did
nothing for me personally. The female cast members frankly looked like the kind
of ladies that you might find murdered on snuff reels found in the private
stash of some sick rich pervert, locked away in a personal vault. Still,
besides some rather warped shenanigans in the film, a few things did appeal to
me (minor bits, but still more than a lot of the stuff I’ve been watching
lately). Those involved are obvious zombie fans out of the Italian gore era in
the 70s/80s. I can see and feel the influence of Fulci. The score reminded me
of Fabio Frizzi, with a little 80s Casio for good measure. There was the “rise
from the grave” sequence that shows the dead bursting from the ground thanks to
the masturbation juices of Zoe Matthews (as Dawna of the title)! Yes, her cum
has given the dead a reason to break free from their graves in search of sexual
partners! Dawna’s friend, tagging along just to help her conjure the spirit of
a dead boyfriend on a Ouija Board, is left alone for a moment (Dawna has to
pee), soon taking a stroll through the cemetery, eventually accosted by a zombie,
not long after succumbing to the lust of the situation. So that whole taboo on
necro-loving is addressed here significantly. The undead aren’t eating flesh,
they are orally pleasured and shagging those who are present and near them in
their cemetery! Hardcore sex, this is for the most part, with special attention provided
to makeup on the face and wardrobe tattered on the undead, with
Dawna the Dead
also featuring those lines and scratches mimicking low budget flicks in the 70s
that looked to have been shot on the cheapest stock available. I think this is at its best when aping gothic horror of the past, and the undead are surprisingly creepy. Out of the cast,
I preferred Aiden Starr over Zoe Matthews. If anything, Starr has some decent
flashes of acting ability. Even the screaming from Matthews seems applied by
sound effects. The lighting is rather murky (intentionally, I thought) and
while the final reel of the film follows Dawna as the night has faded into the
day walking about naked in a real cemetery, I never felt the graveyard where
all the sex occurs looked all that authentic (I could be wrong, though, because
the lighting is so dark). The cast looked rather like average folks to me,
although I could see Starr in a lot of hardcore/softcore that might be
considered popular to the cravings of the audience of today. If you are familiar with hardcore, then explicit sexual contact and oral activity should be expected. The use of blood and sperm left me rather queasy. From what I
gather, “horror porn” is a subgenre starting to gain some traction, although I
can’t see myself investing time in it much.
