Mikey surveys a kill in Rob Zombie's Halloween |
Not long after the bully is dispensed with, the next targets
to be executed are Mikey’s own family. Mama leaves to dance the pole at the Red
while Mikey was supposed to get taken trick-or-treating in the neighborhood by
his sister. Sister decides she wants to shag her boyfriend instead, while the
bum “step pops” crashes in his recliner taking in old horror movies (like White
Zombie). After squatting on the house entrance steps in the midst of a severe
disappointment, Mikey gets up, eats some candy in the kitchen, chooses a large
butcher knife and some duct tape in the drawer, and prepares to subdue his
hateful step pops in the living room to the recliner. A sliced throat bleeding
out while Mikey coldly surveys his work, the cantankerous malcontent old fart dies
right there as deep breaths fade into a stop. The sister’s boyfriend decides to
raid the fridge after banging her, with Mikey getting violent use out of a
steel bat by striking the unknowing victim savagely multiple times leaving the
kitchen floor (and the dude’s skull) a bloody mess. Then finding the white
Halloween mask the boyfriend brought along to amuse the sister, Mikey would
abandon the clown mask for it. In one of those uncomfortable moments that
offers a strange incestuous vibe, Mikey’s bloody hand tickles his practically
naked sister’s leg and she pops up (while listening to “Don’t Fear the Reaper”)
in disgust. A stab wound to the stomach followed by one slash to the back after
another, the sister collapses in the hall outside her bedroom, eventually
succumbing to her injuries. Mikey has embraced the darkness within and hiding
behind the mask, he is able to unleash it upon others who, in the beginning,
seemed to have wronged him. As time goes on, however, Michael needs no reason
to brutalize and destroy. Mother comes home to find Michael with his baby
sister and the police soon arrive to cart him off to the booby hatch.
This scene is the next step in the direction of Michael the
psychopath. The bully was his first taste of a satisfying human kill. It was
just getting started and wouldn’t be enough to satiate that darkness that
wanted out to play. So Zombie continues to follow up on that evil evolution.
The next chapter in the film is Doc Loomis’ methods to investigate Michael and
get to the root of his psychopathy, hoping to gain an understanding of what
caused him to kill his family. Loomis never helps Michael; if anything, he
merely benefits from his patient as a subject to exploit and gain notoriety in
a book about him. Michael would never forget the sister or Loomis. Soon to be
abandoned by his mom (who commits suicide after accepting that she would never
be able to recover from the loss of her daughter and what had become of her
son) and Loomis (who tells him he will not be able to no longer visit him, and
pretty much admits that he will be locked away for good), humanity is replaced
by darkness and the killer is all that is left besides a slight emergence
towards the end of the brother that had found his little sister.
