Supernatural - Bugs

So I will say starting off that I really liked the ongoing discussion between Sam and Dean about their father in relation to a real estate agent and his insect-loving son. So a gas employee working on Larry Pike's (Andrew Airlie) growing settlement in Oklahoma falls in a sinkhole of the ground and is attacked by beetles, leaving him with an odd type of mad cow. A real estate agent working for Larry is attacked by spiders in her shower. Sam and Dean meet up with Larry's son, Matt (Tyler Johnston), in the woods nearby the settlement, locating two skulls in a pit surrounded by congregating insects. An anthropology professor leads them to Joe Whitetree (Jimmy Herman), a Native American scholar telling them about the Equinox and how his ancestors were murdered on their own land by the Calvary due to not relocating at their command. So the last Native American dying cursed the land resulting in this six day period where nature works to keep the white man from living or staying on/in the area.

The CGI bees and flying insects (and spiders in the shower scene) are 2005 effects. I try to keep that in mind as I cringe. Dean and Sam sell the hell out of the big flying insect swarm at the end, as they get Larry's family in the attic, fighting it off as the daylight emerges to save them in the nick of time. I cut them some slack because effects have come a long way and "Supernatural" is a CW show with a limited budget. The tension between Larry and Matt parallels to Sam his own struggles with his own father as Dean tries to get the point across that their father wasn't disappointed in him even if he preferred soccer and college to bowhunting and monster hunting. Larry doesn't get Matt's interest in "bugs" while Sam felt his father didn't get he just wanted to live a normal life. Dean tries to take up for their father since he isn't there.

In this show, Sam and Dean's father is such a very significant character despite never appearing in person. I guess, for me, I get a story arc on the big hunt to find the father, but, eventually, he needs to at least make an appearance. This reminds me of the show, "Werewolf", where Eric Cord (John J York) is trying to find a particular werewolf heavy named Janos (Chuck Connors). Janos is only in 8 of the 29 episodes. The show is about Eric's journey to find Janos and how he comes across other dangers and stories along the way. I don't really have to see Sam and Dean's father every other episode, but it would be nice to at least have something with him involved. The father is like this distant alien Mulder and Scully can never quite encounter, serving as a talking point for Sam and Dean...a hook man and cursed land insects sort of feel as if they serve as offroads from the highway, keeping the brothers from finding their father. And as the show continues, Jessica's death seems to gradually fade into the ether, reminding me of Susan Sullivan who is killed at the beginning of "The Incredible Hulk", as Bill Bixby goes on the road, on the lam, her memory eventually disregarded the longer the show moved on and David Banner's adventures take him further away from what caused his condition to begin with. 2/5
